New Year's Eve

So New Year's Eve is now pretty much a distant memory but I wanted to share how we celebrated it as they'd be pretty cool for any celebration - I'm definitely going to adopt some for birthdays in the future!

Sprinkle-tinis

Instead of a martini, have a sprinkle-tini! These look really cute and the kids loved having their own "special drink". 

Propping up the bar...

All you need is a glass (we used plastic cocktail ones from Poundland), some honey and sprinkles. I wiped a bit of honey around the upper outer rim of the glass and then rolled it in a plate of sprinkles. Leave it to dry for an hour and then add the the drink of choice. Perfect!


I especially loved it when they cheers'd each other :) I initially saw the idea here - check out the link for other nice ideas for child-friendly NYE ideas.


Balloon drop

This was so much fun and will definitely be repeated!! 



All you need is:
2 large pieces of light material (I used tulle as I had some at home - planning to make some skirts for Iz but not quite found the time yet!)
Masking tape
Confetti (I used pompoms and foam shapes)
Balloons (lots of!)
A balloon pump (optional but very handy if you have one)

Then it is as simple as:
- lie the 2 pieces of fabric on the floor and tape them together, just on one side, long edge to long edge
- make a long "tail" of masking tape at one end by looping the tape over itself
- then tape the three sides of the "combined piece" to the ceiling, leaving the fourth side open so you can fill the pouch with balloons/confetti/pompoms
- once it is filled tape up the 4th side so only the tail is left hNging down
- gather your children underneath and instruct a willing volunteer to pull on the tape tail...

Ready for action...

Tada! Homemade balloon drop!! SO much fun and just using things you have around the house :)




Both kids had loads of fun playing with the balloons and pompoms all afternoon. And added bonus - all of it is reusable. Just peel off the masking tape and your fabric is good as new :)


Fireworks painting

What's not to love about loo rolls? They are free, you always have a supply and they are an awesome painting tool!

For this super simple fireworks painting I just cut into the top of a couple and put one in different bowls of paint.


Iz just went for a massive free-for-all whereas D really carefully did one colour and then put another one inside, colour co-ordinating each one so there were matching pairs.

Edible bubble painting

Remember how you used to blow bubbles in your milk as a child? And probably got told off for doing it?! Well now you can encourage your little ones to do it, and make beautiful pictures at the same time :)


This is a super toddler-safe activity especially while they're learning how to blow consistently. You can also do it with bubble mix (post coming soon) and can make way more bubbles that way but it's not nearly as taste-safe if they accidentally suck!

What do you need?
-  Milk
-  Food colouring
-  Watercolour paper

What to do?
-  Pour some milk into small dishes or containers (I find ramekin dishes the perfect size).
-  Add a few drops of food colouring.
-  Give your child a straw and let them blow!

D really enjoyed just blowing bubbles to start with. He loved seeing different colours and watching how high the bubbles rose.



After a while we decided to make some pictures and tried a couple of different ways.

First D tried putting the paper on top of the dish of bubbles



Next I held the paper at about 80 degrees next to the dish whilst D blew bubbles. I think this method worked much better. The neon food colours were also much prettier than the regular food colourings we tried first.

I helped hold for this one - so pretty!

After we'd made some pictures D decided on the direction of play. I love it when he takes over the activity as I get to see his creativity :)

First he poured all the colours out one by one.


Then he tried to blow bubbles on the tray (unsuccessfully!).


How pretty is the waste product?!

Meanwhile Iz was doing semaphore in baby jail...



Next D added paper towels and watched as the different colours seeped through and spread out.

And he quickly discovered he could make handprints.




All of these added a whole extra dimension to the activity that I hadn't even thought of - just love his imagination :)

Tips:
- use a thinner straw rather than the fat ones to get better bubbles
- neon food colouring gave much more vibrant colours than regular colours
- use watercolour paper as that will absorb some of the liquid and give nicer pics

We had so much fun with this very simple activity and definitely recommend it if you haven't tried it with your little ones. If you make any pictures I'd love to see them :)

Magic milk

Aka Doof's first science experiment


If you've never heard of magic milk then you definitely need to try this out. Super simple (you will already have all the ingredients needed) and it kept D engrossed for over half an hour (a long time in toddler-time!).

What you need:
-  Milk (not skimmed - we used full fat and Iz's discarded formula)
-  Food colouring
-  Liquid soap
-  Cake pop stick (could also use a cotton bud or cocktail stick but I like cake pop sticks because they aren't sharp but are thin enough to be good fine motor practice for D)

What to do:


Pour a thin layer of milk into a bowl (if the layer is too deep the colours will get lost) and add a few drops of food colouring

Watch as they initially spread a little - weird how some colours spread much more than others! Then the fun bit - dip your stick into the liquid soap and then hold it in the milk


The colours will initially "run" away from it.But if you keep holding it in the same place they will then dance back towards it

Pretty patterns


We also made some pictures by dipping watercolour paper on top of the colours as they were spiralling. It was quite tricky for D to get the timing right though!

I love how simple this is to do but yet how much it held D's attention. Once we'd "used up" all the fat in the milk I just poured it away and poured out some more and D could start again. 

Sometimes it's nice to recognise just how many learning opportunities there are for toddlers in even simple activities. In this one D:
    - talked about colours
    - used new words like "swirl/whirl"
    - practised fine motor skills when squeezing the food colour bottles
    - followed new commands (eg "hold the stick still") 
    - learnt about cause and effect (after a few seconds he realised if he put the soapy stick end into an area of colour it would quickly swirl away and change its patten).

The secret of the bursting colors is the chemistry of that tiny drop of soap. Dish soap, because of its bipolar characteristics (nonpolar on one end and polar on the other), weakens the chemical bonds that hold the proteins and fats in solution. The soap's polar, or hydrophilic (water-loving), end dissolves in water, and its hydrophobic (water-fearing) end attaches to a fat globule in the milk. This is when the fun begins.
The molecules of fat bend, roll, twist, and contort in all directions as the soap molecules race around to join up with the fat molecules. During all of this fat molecule gymnastics, the food coloring molecules are bumped and shoved everywhere, providing an easy way to observe all the invisible activity. As the soap becomes evenly mixed with the milk, the action slows down and eventually stops.
Try adding another drop of soap to see if there's any more movement. If so, you discovered there are still more fat molecules that haven't found a partner at the big color dance. Add another drop of soap to start the process again
